Project 1: Green Info Shelter: Exploring The Environment Poetics

Project 1 was a small scale project intended to teach us how to further improve our site analysis and use more diagramming to illustrate our information. The main task for project 1 was to design an environmentally friendly information shelter located next to the CODA gallery of Taylors University. The purpose of the shelter was to provide a location where students could sit down and wait for their parents or friends to pick them up from the roundabout area in Taylors. This shelter was intended to also utilized the wasted empty space right next to the CODA gallery. The shelter would also be used by CODA to promote or provide information about the events at the CODA gallery to people. This project was a team effort and the theme that my partner and I decided to go with was minimalism. Due to the fact that the CODA gallery is mainly used to promote various artworks of students to other people, my partner and I had the idea to promote and educate people of art through the concept of minimalism. The shelter would be made using simple minimalistic shapes such as squares and rectangles. We decided to arrange the shapes in a progressive form. It would seem like the user is moving from one portal to the next. The shape would evolve from a very simple shape to a slightly more complex shape. Due to the minimalistic properties of the structure, users are free to interpret this unique shelter as they please. This shleter is also environmentally friendly using concrete to help it last longer with lower maintainence. The shelter is also open allowing wind to flow through it for optimal ventilation.

Project 2 (Part 1): Nature Appreciation Center

For project 2, everyone was tasked with designing their own Nature Appreciation Center with the site provided by the lecturers. The site is located in Belum Rainforest, Perak. Before begining with the design stage, all the students had to wrok together as a team to perform a thorough site analysis. We had to get all the neccesecary information about out site such as the types of trees, animals, the sun path, wind path and etc. Once all the info was gathered, we had to compile them into presentation boards and present all the information to our lecturers. Once that was completed, we could start with our own individual design of the Nature Appreciation Center.

Project 2 (Part 2): Nature Appreciation Center

Belum Rainforest is one of the oldest rainforest in Malaysia and theme that I wanted to go with is to create a Nature Appreciation Center (NAC) that is in harmony with the surrounding natural environment. I wanted a NAC that was in harmony with the environment by integrating the trees and plants in the area with the buildings instead of removing them. The NAC is built using materials such as steel, glass and timber to help make the buildings look light and less imposing on site. All of the buildings are very open due to the glass windows. This helps blur the lines between the inside and the outside environment, making them seem unified rather than 2 seperate environments. The existing structures are reused as a main reception area and a souvenir shop. To help attract all sorts of people to come to the NAC, I have provided various activites to help users have fun while learning and experiencing the natural environment of Belum Rainforest. Activities such as ziplining, rock climbing and kayaking have been provided. The users can come to the site by boat or by bicycle. A jetty is built to allow the boat to dock and several bicycle checkpoint have been provided to ensure that there are enough bicycles for the users to use. The NAC has been clustered into a few spaces. Users can move through the reception area to the large information gallery where they learn about the Rainforest along with the plants and animals in it. From there they can move to the learning spaces where children can take part in various art activites while adults can choose to read in the mini library area or partake in the art activities with the kids. Users can also move to the cafeteria area where the can relax and enjoy the beautiful mountain view. The cafeteria consists of an upper deck and a lower deck to accomodate more people. People who are visiting the NAC in a group can meet at the large communal hall before moving to the learning spaces, info gallery or exploring other parts of the NAC. There is also a viewing tower with two different levels of landings to allow people to have a view of the area at different points. Users can climb along the side of this viewing tower or do the zipline activity at the top of the tower. The NAC was built using sustainable materials to help reduce negative impact on the environment. Steel is long lasting, easy to transport and quick to assemble while timber a natural and renewable building material that does not absorb carbon through its life cycle and is recyclable. Bamboo elements have also been added to represent the traditional materials used by orang asli to build the existing structures on site. Large pitch roofs with long overhangs are used to provide optimal shading for users from rain and sun. All buildings are very open to allow daylight to enter. Louvers are used at the top of the building to allow hot air to rise while cool air passes through the building providing good ventilation for users in a hot and humid environment. As a conclusion, a sustianable NAC that is in harmony with the natural environment has been made along with various forms of activities for users who wish to get away from city have been provided. I believe that users will have an enjoyable learning experience at this Nature Appreciation Center.
