Architectural Design Studio 6 (ARC 3127)
For the final year project, students were given the chance to select the type of project that they wanted to do for their studio. I decided to go for designing a centre for humanity for my final project with the site located in Pudu, Kuala Lumpur. In a large group, I worked with my group mates to collect as much data as possible from the site analysis and compiled them together to make a video to be presented to the lecturers. The video shows all the neccesay data such as the types of buildings, landmarks, types of people living on site and etc. We even made a 3D site model to be shown, giving people a better idea of how the site in Pudu looks like.
The program that I proposed to my tutor for the final project is to provide an Empowerment Centre for the people of Pudu. The main reason I proposed this program was to help resolve certain key issues that I discovered on site while performing the site analysis. As the theme of the project was about sustaining humanities, I felt that this program was the most suitable one to as an Empowerment Centre is meant to help humanity. After completeting the site analysis, I discovered that the key issue the site has is a large number of homeless people and migrants from other countries. This program targets the migrants and the homeless people and aims to provide them with useful education and vocational skills to help get them back on their feet and make them useful members of society. Besides that, the program will give the participants a sense of belonging and also helps create bonds between the partipants and the people of Pudu. This program is also open to anyone who anyone who needs help and feel that they want to improve themselves. Anyone who wants to help the helpless are encourage to volounteer and help the program participants.
The concept behind the design of the building is the idea of a family concept. The building is meant to create a sense of belonging and is suppose to feel welcoming to all the people. The design of the building is also site specific as the form follows the shape of the site and also interacts with the surrounding environment. This makes the building look welcoming to the people. The concept of family also means safety and security. Thus, people within the building are meant to feel safe. A sense of transparency is also created using windows and balconies to connect users in the building to the site.
