Building Materials (ARC 1513)
Excercise: My Home,My Space
The main objective of this exercise was to introduce to us the proper methods of analyzing and identifying different materials used for construction, finishes, furnishings. We had to learn how to describe the properties of the materials used and how they are used. After that, we had to produce proper documentation.
After finishing this exercise, I learnt a lot about the building materials used in my house, which is something that I have never noticed before. I can now reconize the different materials used and their properties. I am also capable of describing them properly.
Project 1: "Materiality of Space: An experimental exploration"
The purpose of this project is similar to the exercise before that is to introduce students to new types of materials used in construction and also to further understand the physical and chemical properties of the construction materials. This project also exposes all students to standard construction names, terminologies for materials in a space and building.
Upon completing the boards, I managed produce a complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical properties. I am now capable identifying more different types of materials and I have acquired analytical skills in understanding selection of building materials for a building. I also have a better understanding of the application and installation of material as finish and structural material.
Most importantly, I also understand the importance of team work in order to complete our task.
Project 2 Integration: Material Specification
This final project is an integration between Building Materials and Design Studio 1. The process of selection and proposal of materials are shown to me here. This project also allows me to demonstrate my understanding of building materials and exposes me to the latest forms of technology related to building materials by making me research about them.
I have applied my understanding of various types of building material which affects the tactile and chemical properties of design, building and space. I have also discovered many new forms of technology related to building materials and how they are applied in the construction process. I have produced various drawings to represent the building materials in my hideout and I understand the effects of building materials on occupancy, aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building.
