Project 1: Sketchbook & Journal

Methods of Documentation & Measured Drawings (ARC 1215)

The first project is purely individual. All students are required to produce at least 20 sketches using whatever media they are most comfortable with during the trip in Penang. We were suppose to sketch anything that was interesting and the sketches were suppose to help people get a better understanding of how life is in Penang.  Through this project, I have learnt how to communicate the details and the spirit of a place graphically . I have also improved my sketching abilities and my observation of the surroundings.

Sketching the old, historical and even the new buildings in Penang has help understand the place better. Sketching the activities that happened throughout my trip in Penang has also been in interesting as life in Penang is quite different from back home. I have also learnt how to appreciate the architectural cultural heritage buildings  and also how these buildings influence the context of the surrounding area. I can also recognize and classify the historical structures better in Penang.

The second project was more of a team effort with individual components. All of the students were seperated into different groups and each groups were given different sites to work with. The group that I was a part of was given a site in Penang and the building was called Wisma Yeap Chor Ee. All of us were required to measure the building from bottom to top. The task was a diffucult one but with teamwork, we managed to measure the whole building. Through this process, I have learnt the importance of teamwork to accompish our goals. Besides that, I have also learnt proper techniques of measuring a building on site and how to work with the measuring tools. By measuring the building, I now know all the architectural elements of this building as well.

After all the measurement were acquired, we were required to translate measured data into scaled drawings using Autocad. This was difficult as we had to cross-reference all our measurements to produce the perfect drawings. I have learnt how to use the Autocad through this project.

Finally, we had to produce a scaled physical model of the Wisma Yeap Chor Ee. The materials we decided to work with was balsa wood because this would help improve the appearance of the model. Besides that, we also had to provide some architectural details of the building. By working together, we managed to complete the model ahead of schedule. I have learnt some new model making techniques from my other team mates.

Project 2: Meausred Drawings & Model

Project 3: Building Report

The final project required us to produce a report with at least 3000 to 6000 words about our building which is Wisma Yeap Chor Ee. This project helps us to recognize and recall architectural historic structure documentation method. Working on the building and writing a report about it has taught us a lot about the history of this building and also about the owner of the building which was Yeap Chor Ee himself. Yeap Chor Ee became successful and rich from the time when he started out as a barber. I am also able to describe this building very well after working on it and i can also understand the relationship between architecture and the significance of the building as well as its inhabitation.

A visual presentation and a verbal presentation to our lecturers was also required. Members of the team have work hard to produce a video for our presentation that could show the elements of the building and it's surrounding context.

Finally, a website for our project had to be made as well and a photobook comprising of all the interesting photos of the building and our team was also made and displayed along with our model for the final presentation.
