Project: Precedent Study

Architecture Culture & History 1 (ARC 1313)

The project for this subject is divided into four parts:

- Part 1: Essay Writing (Group work)

- Part 2: Analysis Presentation Board (Individual Board)

- Part 3: Model Making (Group work)

- Part 4: Verbal Presentation (Group and Individual work)

The main purpose of this project is to introduce basic architectural theory through a consideration of intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships. We also have to examine architecture history through a chronological survey, looking at the intellectual, aesthetic, technological, political and economic factors which have influenced architectural design.

Each group are given the option to choose a specific period for this project and begin studying and analysis each period for the project. The period that my group selected for this project is the Gothic era. I have learnt a lot about the Gothic era through this project especially about the building we selected which is Notre Dame de Paris. Gothic Architecture has well known structures such as the flying buttress, pointed arches, rose windows, gargoyles, sexpartite vaults and many more. The buildings during this era are normally very tall and they have a skeletal structure.

After completing this project, I am now able to exemplify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally. I can also classify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
