Design Communication (ARC 1713)

Project 1A: On-site Sketching

Through the process of sketching for this porject, I have developed new techniques to improve my sketching techniques such the hatching, cross-hatching,scribbling and stippling technique. I also have a better understanding on how to draw a perspective view and how the scale and proportion of objects can affect a certain perspective.

I have also learnt  how to improve my rendering techniques. Certain techniques of rendering allows me to show depth in a space and also show the types of materials used to construct a structure. Besides that, good rendering allows me to show the light and shadows in a space.

Project 1B: Tonal Values

This project has helped me improved my sketching techniques further by allowing me to practice each technique. Creating depth and tone in a sketch can help bring a sketch to life and make it look realistic. These techniques can help create depth in a space and using different tone also helps to show the light, shadow and depth in a certain space.

Project 2A: Orthographic projections (plans, sections, elevations)

This project has taught me how to produce proper orthographic drawings such as  plans, elevations, and sections manually using tools such as the T-square and the set  square. I  have also learnt how to arrange my drawings in a proper and presentable way  on a  presentation board. Besides understading how orthographic drawings work, I can  now  produce proper and accurate drawings to scale using the scale ruler. Using line  weight is  very important when it comes to orthographic drawings as it helps to  determine the  distance of certain parts of the building from a person’s point of view.  Rendering can also be  done in orthographic drawings using the techniques like hatching  or cross hatching to help  create depth.

Project 2B: Axonometric Projections

This project has helped me to understand axonometric drawings better and how  to produce these drawings properly and accurately. Besides learning how to
produce a 3 dimensional drawing, I have also discovered that line weight plays an important role in axonometric drawings as well. I have also been taught how to
produce exploded axonometric drawings to show the interior or parts of a building that cannot be seen. Rendering techniques can also be applied in these drawings to help create depth and also to show light and shadow, making the drawing look more lively and realistic.

Project 2C: Perspectives

The final project for design communication has taught me the techniques on how to produce a two point and one point perspective manually. A perspective drawing allows me
illustrate a building in a very nice way and it is easier to understand compared to an orthographic or axonometric drawing of the building. By using perspective drwaings, I can
show the space of that structure and how it feels to be in that space and interacting with it. Perspective drawings can help me improve my creativity as well. By adding more
detail into the perspective, I can give people a feeling of how the space is like.

Besides that, rendering and adding details into the perspective can help improve the look of the drawing. Choosing the right angle to produce a perspective drawing is also important because certain angles may not show anything important or attractive to a person. Previous rendering techniques that i learned were also applied here to help create depth in the perspective. The arrangement of drawings and labelling on the board is also very important to help make the drawings look presentable.

Subject Learning Outcomes

Overall, this subject has given me valueble skills that are important and can be used in the future. Project one has helped me improve my free hand drawing skills, my rendering techniques and also shown me how to produce proper architectural sketches. This subject also has shown me how to produce drawings that shows how it would feel like to be in a space and also helped me improve my creativity.

Project 2 has taught me how to produce proper 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional technical drawings manually and also how to arrange my work presentably on a board. Furthermore, I have also discovered the importance of lineweights in technical drawings and how to apply them. These skills have been very useful and they have been applied in all my projects.
