Architectural Design Studio 5 (ARC 3117)

Preliminary Studies for Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur

Before entering the design phase for the Studio 5 project, students had to work in small groups to perform a detailed site analysis for the site which is Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur. Two seperate site for this project were provided. Site A and Site B; both located in Chow Kit, were provided for the students to choose for their project. After the the macro and micro analysis for Chow Kit was done, each group had provide diagrams along with all the details of their analysis on several boards for presentation. Precedent studies were also provided to help students better understand what a market place is before designing one.

The proposal for the program for the contemporary market that I gave is a flea market. The reason I proposed the flea market program for my contemporary market design was to introduce a new type of program that is not available in Chow Kit. Chow Kit has many wet market, clothes market and eateries. The introduction of a flea market would allow this particular market to coexist with the other existing markets rather than create extreme competition amongst them. The flea market would be a new form of attraction for the people. Flea markets also encourages buyers and shop keepers to chat and haggle, thus, creating a bond between them making buyers actually come back again. The inspiration for the design of the form of my building was taken from a building designed by Herzog de Meuron which was a very unique multipurpose parking lot. The concept for my design is permeability and the cross connection between the exterior and the interior of the building along with the connection between different floors of the building. The building is designed by experimenting with different floor plates and openings in the floor plates. The design of the building was also made to intentionally stand out among the older surrounding buildings. This should allow my flea market to act as a form of landmark helping people remember the place easily. Unique spaces withing the building is created to help create attachment for the users towards the building. The special spacial experience will make users want to return to the market. The open design also allows the back alley to be linked visually with the front alley; allowing the back alley to be utilized. The advantages of my site in Chow Kit is the location of the monorail station nearby allowing people to easily access the site by walking. Besides that, there is a drop off point in front of the site that allows people to access the site using vehicles. Bus stops and taxi stands are also located nearby all along the road.
