Design Statement

The form in architecture has always fascinated me before I started learning about architecture. Once I started learning more about architecture, I discovered that I had to factor in many things before deisigning something. However, this never stopped me from experimenting with the form to create interesting architecture. By using simple forms, I start the design process by creating the massing of the building by merging cubes, cuboids or triangles to create unique forms along with different volumes of spaces within the building.

The form of the building functions as a cover of a book does. The form should be able to give the people an idea of the building function. It should mesmerize a person and make them ponder. Once a person enters a building, the building should be able to tell the person a story to help them better appreciate the architecture and the spaces within. True to the fact that form should follow function but that should never stop an architect from experimenting with form while designing.

The use of simple form and geometry in design enables architects to create amazing architecture while maintaining practicality in the current time. Ornamentation used in ancient architecture created stunning buildings, however, they are unecessary in the current era and they also do not fit in with modern architecture which uses minimal to no ornaments. Even great architects like Frank Loyd Wright, Walter Gropius and etc. do not use excessive ornamentation; instead, they use simple forms to create outstanding architecture. Ornaments aren't practical because they take time to make and they will also increase the cost of construction. However, ornamentation can create value and appretiation among people towards a building. I draw inspiration and guidance from these architects to further improve myself and hopefully discover my own style of architecture through all my experiments.

Back to the topic of practicality, simple geometric shapes are highly practical when it comes to designing. Maintenance of the building is easy and custom made furniture are not required as most made furniture would fit in the building. Through my experimentation with forms, I discovered that organic shape structure have disadvantages in practicality despite having a rather ostentatious look. The construction of organic buildings would cost a lot and these buildings tend to not fit the surrounding contect. Unless the architect intentionally wants to create contrast, the building would be a terrible fit for the site. I believe in the use of simplistic forms to create an elegant structure.

Despite using mostly simple geometric shapes to form a design, I have never settled for a particular style of architecture. Every project that I have done never truly had the same language. However, each project has always focused on the users and I have always tried to make them as site specific as I possibly could. These facts are important as they help me shape and form spaces with unique spacial experiences for the user. Most of the designs of my buildings have been somewhat minimalistic due to the use of simple geometry. I also enjoy playing with different materials to create different experiences while designing; however I do favour bare and raw looking buildings with minimal finishing. Architecture to me is an experiement, I will always continue to try new things and improve myself. Along the way I discover my strengths and weaknesses until I find what truly suits me best in designing.
